Mining is a global guessing game with a prize. Here's the whole thing, honestly:
The network has a pile of pending transactions bundled into a candidate block. Everyone's trying to "seal" it.
You add a random number (a "nonce") and run the block through a one-way hash function — a mathematical blender that returns a fixed-size fingerprint.
If that fingerprint is smaller than the network's target, you win the block. If not — and it almost never is — you change the nonce and guess again. Millions of times a second.
Whoever finds a winning guess first broadcasts the sealed block, earns the reward, and everyone builds on top. Then it starts over.
That's proof-of-work: security by spent effort. Rewriting history would mean re-doing all that work faster than the entire honest network combined — which is why it's hard to cheat. When you press start above, your device is doing exactly step 2 and 3, for real.
Bitcoin's hash is pure math, so specialized chips (ASICs) crush ordinary machines. MetalDAG deliberately leans on memory bandwidth instead — the one thing a normal GPU already has plenty of. That keeps mining on hardware people own.
Because there's no giant advantage to build a chip for, there's no manufacturer chokepoint. A laptop, a Mac, a phone, a gaming rig — all can meaningfully take part. Which is the whole point.
